The Doors

Claude watermarks generated text. It is a keyed pattern in low-stakes word choices, not hidden characters or extra tokens. Anthropic reports no quality impact, no tracing to a person, organization, or chat, and a detection API coming. Claude in Chrome is generally available on every paid plan. Claude Helps is an independent publication and is not affiliated with Anthropic.

The hallway

Open one.

Click a door, or use keys 1–4. Arrows move. Esc closes. One door at a time. Nothing is uploaded.

A closed door is a question. An open door is the answer we would give a coworker, with the source on the wall.

No door is open. Pick one in the hallway.

Behind each door

The same answers, written down.

The hallway is the way in. These four cards are the citeable copy, so a crawler that never clicks still gets the facts.

I · Watermarking

Does Claude watermark text?

Yes. Anthropic watermarks text Claude generates so a holder of the key can estimate whether Claude was involved. The method is a version of SynthID-Text: at the many points where several next words would be equally good, the watermark changes only the source of the randomness used to break the tie. Nothing is inserted. A reader cannot see it.

II · Chrome

Is Claude in Chrome generally available?

Yes. Claude in Chrome is generally available on every paid Claude plan. It is a Chrome extension that can see the page you are on and act in it — reading, typing, clicking, navigating, and filling forms with your existing logins — so Claude can reach internal dashboards, legacy tools, and vendor portals that have no connector.

III · Email

Can Claude send my email?

No. Claude can triage a thread, extract decisions, and draft a reply in your voice. Anthropic’s Gmail connector can search, read, label, and create drafts. It cannot send. Keep the send decision, especially when the message involves money, contracts, hiring, or anything you would not want forwarded as-is.

IV · Files

Can Claude work a PDF or a spreadsheet?

Yes. Anthropic lists ten upload types, including PDF, DOCX, CSV, and XLSX. Start with an inventory of what Claude can actually see — title, sections, tables, missing pages — before you ask for a summary. Claude can also create .xlsx, .pptx, .docx, and PDF files, on every plan, up to 30MB per file.

FAQ

Questions the doors already answer

Does Claude watermark text?

Yes. Anthropic watermarks generated text to comply with the EU AI Act, using a SynthID-Text method. No hidden characters, no extra tokens, no practical quality impact. The watermark is not person-traceable and is not a plagiarism detector. A detection API is in private preview and Anthropic says access will expand.

Is Claude in Chrome generally available?

Yes. Claude in Chrome is generally available on every paid Claude plan. It is a Chrome extension that can read and act on the current page with your existing logins. It does not run on other Chromium browsers or on mobile, and it does not reach local files.

Can Claude send email for me?

No. Claude can draft. Anthropic’s Gmail connector can create drafts but cannot send emails on your behalf. Keep the send decision.

Can Claude analyze a PDF or a spreadsheet?

Yes. Anthropic documents uploads for PDF, DOCX, CSV, XLSX, and other listed types. Ask for an inventory before a summary. Claude can also create Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and PDF files, up to 30MB per file.
