What it makes and who can use it

Claude creates Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx), PowerPoint presentations (.pptx), Word documents (.docx), and PDF files, and can generate data visualizations as PNG images. You download them from the conversation or save them straight to Google Drive.

Anthropic says code execution and file creation is available to all Claude users — Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — on web, Claude Desktop, and Claude Mobile. On Free, Pro, and Max it is enabled by default; if it is off, turn it on under Settings then Capabilities. On Team and Enterprise it is enabled by default at the organization level and an owner can disable it.

  1. Check Settings, then Capabilities, for the code execution and file creation toggle.
  2. Upload the source data or document first.
  3. Describe the structure, content, and formatting you want, not just the file type.
  4. Download the file and open it before you send it anywhere.

Ask for the file, but specify the shape

Anthropic’s guidance is to be specific about structure, content, and formatting, and to expect to review and refine. “Create a monthly budget tracker with income, expense categories, and automatic calculations for savings” produces a workbook with real formulas. “Make me a budget” produces a guess.

The documented workflows are worth copying directly: build a financial model in Excel, generate a quarterly sales report from a CSV as a formatted Word document or PDF with charts, convert a Word document into a presentation, extract a PDF’s tables into a spreadsheet with a summary chart, or chain several of those in one conversation. Claude handles multiple files in a single chat, and the files stay downloadable throughout it.

Know the cost and the sandbox

File creation draws from your plan’s normal usage limits, and Anthropic notes it uses more of that limit than ordinary chat. If you are generating a lot of documents, expect to hit limits faster than your text-only intuition suggests.

The work happens in an isolated sandbox container, never shared between users. Whether Claude can reach the internet from inside it depends on network egress settings: off means pre-installed packages only, package-managers-only is the default on Team and Enterprise, and owners can allowlist specific domains or open it fully.

The security case for keeping egress tight is concrete. Anthropic warns that a bad actor can hide instructions in an external file or website to trick Claude into running untrusted code or reading data from a connected source and sending it out. Disabling network access removes the exfiltration path. Anthropic also runs a prompt-injection classifier that stops execution on detection, and recommends you watch Claude while it works and stop it if it touches data unexpectedly.

Two behaviors that surprise people

Public sharing is restricted. Anthropic disables public sharing of conversations that include file artifacts from code execution and file creation for Free, Pro, and Max users. If you planned to share a chat link showing the workbook you built, export the file instead.

Project files are reachable. Files in your Projects are accessible through Claude’s computing environment while staying in context, so a recurring workflow can point at project knowledge rather than re-uploading the same source every month. Artifacts still work with file creation on, though Anthropic notes the experience looks slightly different because artifacts now run through the same computing environment.

Prompts to Copy

Create an .xlsx [tracker or model] with these columns: [columns]. Use working formulas, not hardcoded values. Add a separate Assumptions sheet listing every rate, constant, and judgment call you made.

Using the attached CSV, produce a [Word document / PDF] report with an executive summary, the three charts that matter, and a methods note saying which columns and filters you used.

Convert this document into a .pptx. Preserve dates, figures, and risks. Cut implementation detail. Put anything you could not source into a final slide titled Needs Verification.

Does file creation use more of my usage limit?

Yes. Anthropic says it draws from your plan’s normal limits and consumes more than a standard chat.

Why can I not share a chat that contains a generated file?
